This Spring 2016 Decidedly Jazz Danceworks will cut the ribbon to Calgary’s first ever state of the art Dance Facility. Long overdue, this new beautiful building will have 7 dance studios, 220-seat theatre and a host of other features for dance students, parents and audiences to enjoy. This important addition to Calgary’s art scene promises to be a fertile creative conduit for the dance community. Kathi Sundstrom, DJD Executive Director, and the generous support of the Alberta Government , City of Calgary, Department of Canadian Heritage, Suncor Energy Foundation, many private individuals of the Calgary community are to be congratulated for making this dream a reality.
This year we took the photography session out of the studio and for the first (and last time ever) to the ( soon to be ) former DJD location on 4th street. With the clever help of Cameron Clowe we shot against an entirely black curtained off set and black Marley dance floor. Artistic director, Kim Cooper, wanted the vibe to channel Herman Leonard and the old smoky jazz clubs of the 30s and 40s with a spin on it. Brian and I took all the lights in the studio pretty much to hang edge lights all over coming from high and behind the dancers. No problem achieving lens flare I might add! Loved having that nice bouncy floor for a change in contrast to the cement at the studio. There was no blood, but that wasn’t a guarantee of no pain. It was still a lot of crazy work for the dancers to repeatedly do gravity defying moves. The language of their movement looks effortless because they are just that good.
You can look forward to seeing more jump shots from this session to be posted later.
