Early September the One Yellow Rabbit ansemble, complete with all their administration staff, returned to begin new work and they were all in our studio for the first time since the tragic and untimely death of Michael Green. 2015 was not a good year for the Rabbits after losing two core comrades, Richard McDowell in November 2014 and four months later Michael Green. That’s a lot to take in for anyone. Yet, the show must go on and so it does. The title of Blake Brooker’s new play says it all for the Rabbits,” Calgary, I Love You but You’re Killing me!”
Working with One Yellow Rabbit has always been special for me. Memories of 1986 at the Banff Centre and 1988 in our Lewis loft studio popped in my head as I prepared the set for their arrival. Blake’s instructions were sparse, all I had to go on was four or five words. I was also told to expect the delivery of an antique mechanical horse-?
The following images are the result of that session which was wildly fun and in part even a healing experience.
Written and Directed by Black Brooker. Composed by David Rhymer. Performers are Denise Clarke, Andy Curtis, Karen Hines, Jamie Tognassini. Musicians are Jonathan Lewis, Kris Demeanour and David Rhymer. Stage managed by Michelle Kennedy and Sound Design by Dewi Wood.
This is an excerpt from the OYR web site:
This year One Yellow Rabbit is celebrating 30 years of Rodeo madness with a big heartfelt kiss to our town.
OYR’s wickedly funny Calgary, I Love You, but You’re Killing Me is a musical comedy written by Blake Brooker and composed by the talented David Rhymer.
One Yellow Rabbit dowses, parses, and probes questions about our town to find out: Just who the hell are we now?
Don’t miss this ode to Calgary. January 12 – 23rd.
