Allara Gooliaff was wearing hidden knee pads, who knew?!? But boy was I glad!
At first I didn’t understand why she she was enlisting the help of my strapping assistant José on the set. But watching as she flailed herself into a spectacular shape on the hard cement floor it became apparent she wasn’t getting up all by herself. Not because she was hurt but because her legs were an extra five feet long! If I ever have to photograph a dancing giraffe I will know how to work with one. The hard rubber footings at the bottom of her stilts made long black streaks as she elegantly slid over and over again on the white floor and her costume bore the brunt of a dozen landings on the knee pads but it was all well worth it. Once I knew she wasn’t going to die doing it, that is. After I believed she would not be injured we explored her centre of gravity using her movements and caught her right before the fall or in some cases during her fall.
You have to be a little bit crazy to be a stilt dancer ! See more Dancers here.
